Ashton’s President’s Prattle for June, 2026

Good morning! Yes, this is vey late for the May edition, and might almost qualify as June’s edition. Apologies, I got distracted by work, and some fun things!

Including a last minute drive day which a few of us did over the long weekend. Amazingly (and counter to the doomsayers who predicted us being impounded by the filth) we had a clear run all day, no plod, one camera car driving the other way, and clear roads, sunshine and great company – in fact exactly what was needed! Photos from the trip up Putty Road, and back down via Mangrove Mountain and Wiseman’s Ferry. And it was particularly good to catch up with Zed who joined us for coffee in Wolombi (white Evora below!)

The following weekend was round 3 of this year’s CSCA sprints and rather belatedly I decided to give the Elite a run on the South Circuit. I know it’s a bit of a Marmite moment (some love it, some not so much) but I really enjoy it, and I think it suits my rather underpowered cars 🙂 I managed to get into the 1:08s which, while some way off the leaderboard, seems a reasonable time for the car. According to Natsoft I’ve done a 1.03.98 in the Elise so I’ve got some catching up to do!

Looking ahead a bit, we have the (normally 6 hour) 10 hour relay organised by the NSWRRC at SMSP at the end of June (27-28) and you’ll be pleased to know CLA is running a team (it even has some Lotuses in it!) Then there is the Winton Festival of Speed at the end of July (24-26), where the VHRR is re-imagining historic classes NA and SA, so if you have a car sitting in the garage which hasn’t had a class to run in for 20 years, now is your chance!

And now things are starting to settle into a bit more of a rhythm, I’ll see if we can get the committee together for a catch up! Watch this space.

One last fun idea – the Royal Automobile Club has a casual dinner on the last Friday of the month called Bangers and Mash. A few of our number are regulars, and it is a lovely relaxed evening. You can even bring your banger in and park it in the garage (by prior arrangement!) If anyone is interested, please call either Peter Eppel or me – it would be lovely to see you there!

With that, I will get this to Seth and we’ll look forward to seeing you at something soon!

Take care, and keep it upright and mostly on the black stuff.

Pip pip,
Ashton
