This 1998 Lotus Elise Type 111 (convertible, yellow) belonging to the late John Bowers, is available for sale through John’s son Colin.
John was the sole owner of the car, purchasing it new in 1998. He primarily used it for track days, which is why after 27 years, there is still only 25,281 km on the clock (as of 8 April 2025). The car has been well looked after by John, with annual checks and services by a local mechanic from Hornsby. The engine still starts and runs beautifully. However, the car has seen very little use over the past decade, and so there are a few minor issues that could be usefully fixed up. The ones I’ve noticed are:
- Some rust on the disc brakes
- Driver-side door does not hold in the open position
- Trim is a little loose in places
- The car does not have a radio/stereo. From memory, I believe Dad had it taken out quite early in the life of the car and now there is a blank panel where it used to be
The car comes with a soft top that can be manually put on (some effort involved), but those who know the 1998 Elise well can testify that in the rain, the soft top suggests water not come in, but certainly does not insist on it. It also comes with a custom cotton car cover in British Racing Green with the Lotus badge on it. Dad also had a trickle charger that we’ll throw in, which is useful if you plan to keep the car garaged for weeks at a time.
John was passionate about Lotus his entire life. He was heavily involved in the historic F1 scene in Europe over the past decade through his ownership and racing (with driver Andy Middlehurst) of Lotus 25 R4. That famous car will also be up for sale in a few months time, albeit in the UK. John would be delighted if his Elise went to someone who shared his passion for the brand.
Seeking $35,000.
